Happy 129th Birthday Berrigan

BERRIGAN’S 129TH BIRTHDAY

May 31, marks 129 years since Berrigan was officially proclaimed a village!

In 1889, William Creed had carried out a Government survey of township blocks, in the area east of Jerilderie Street, between Greggery Street and Woodstock Road, with this area proclaimed as the village of Berrigan the following year.

Ian Fuzzard, in Berrigan: Today & Yesterday, wrote:
“At the time of its proclamation as a village, Berrigan possessed the following establishments – the Berrigan Hotel with Harris’ store one side and Davies’ blacksmith shop on the other. Hiddle and Pretty were down the other end of Chanter Street with another blacksmith close by. This was a residence, presumably Mitchell’s, at the back of where the Royal Hotel now stands, while, for some peculiar reason, a School of Arts had been erected where the Masonic Temple now stands and quite remote from any other building.”

If you’re interested in learning more about the history of Berrigan, make sure you pop into the museum! We are open every Wednesday morning, 9-11am, or by arrangement.

Berrigan Celebrates Tank Paddock Enhancements

The Berrigan community braved this month’s recent hot weather to celebrate the recent works at Tank Paddock.

The works include the planting of local woodland vegetation, the installation of a bird hide, and the installation of interpretive signage.

Project officer with the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group, Susanne Watkins, said the new developments further enhanced a valuable natural asset in the Berrigan area.

“Historically an important water supply for drovers passing through the area, Tank Paddock later became the location of the town’s water supply,” she said.

“In recent years, it has been turned into a nature reserve through the hard work of the community, including tree planting days and the construction of paths to encourage recreational use within the site.

“The area is regularly used for school cross-country races, and by netball and football clubs for training.”

The works were undertaken as part of the Murray Wetland Carbon Storage Project, a partnership between Murray Local Land Services and the Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group. They were funded by the Australian Government, and supported by Berrigan Shire Council and the Berrigan Conservation Group and Tidy Town Committee

The evening began with a Welcome to Country by Bangarang Elder Freddie Dowling, followed by Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group’s Sarah Ning explaining the importance of wetlands. Later, Threatened Species Officer with the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage, Dr Helen Waudby, enthralled all with her talk on local frogs and bats.

The event also featured a launch of the Wetland Champion Booklet Bill and Cecily’s Farm. Written by students from St Columba’s Primary School with Petaurus Education Group, the book features Murray Wetland Carbon Storage Project landholders Bill and Cecily Nixon talking about their wetland at Savernake and the work they have done through the project to rehabilitate it.

It is hoped that the event will make the community aware of the importance of wetlands and encourage the community to use this special place in the heart of Berrigan.
